Nikon Z6III - The new Mid-tier "Flagship"

Updated: Jul 24

Thanks to Nikon Singapore I had the opportunity to use the Nikon Z6III in Bangkok from 16th to 19th July 2024.

I also used it in Congkak , Malaysia to photograph Kingfishers & Singapore's National Day Parade (NDP) Rehearsals.

For those that are not familiar with my photography journey background , I started using the Nikon Z6 in 2018 when I adopted Nikon's full frame mirrorless as my main system (over my DSLR system)

I now use the Z9 & Z8 as my main cameras for fun & "work" , I do use the Zf for fun & Monochrome photography too

So let's get on with the Z6III !!

The MAIN reason why the Nikon Z6III is so good is because it has an ELECTRONIC SHUTTER that WORKS !!!! This is thanks to the innovative Partially-stacked Sensor & the Expeed7 processor. This post focuses on this amazing implementation.

All the photographs shared in this blog were captured using the Z6III's high performance electronic shutter.

In addition to minimal Rolling-shutter which is the most important aspect, it also enables the flagship inspired Autofocus Tracking features / capabilities, the High Speed Frame capture capability, features like Pre-release Capture & Auto Subject detection of 9 subjects which were only available in the Z9, Z8 & Zf.

Let's take a look at the Z6III's High performance Electronic shutter

No obvious Rolling Shutter distortion seen from the Apache helicopter's blades which says much about the awesome performance of the Z6III's electronic shutter .

What about this moment of a Rufous-backed Kingfisher diving for it's catch , not even a hint of any Rolling-Shutter issues with the wings ...... to put it in perspective the Kingfisher is a speed demon !

If you are still not convinced, more examples with the Rufous-backed Kingfisher & the Blue-eared Kingfisher. Click on thumbnail to see larger image. Again no sign of Rolling Shutter distortion which would appear as significantly elongated curved wings.

What about In-door photography with artificial & continuous lighting ?

I was not able to discern any issues with banding or identify any signs of rolling shutter, Check out this gallery.

What about overall image quality (IQ) of the Z6III's new 24.5MP Partially-stacked sensor ?

In a word SUPERB ! ..... there is NO reason to doubt the IQ from the sensor !

I had read some reviews about poorer dynamic range (DR) & that the Z6III is trading speed for dynamic range, well I FULLY support what the Z6III engineers had done , being able to capture the moment is way more important than a slight drop in dynamic range (if true)

From my experience so far, I do NOT see any concerns with DR at all, in the real world, I am only experiencing the Z6III capturing moment after moment successfully !!!

Check out this gallery displaying details rendered but more importantly the moments that were captured with the Z6III repeatedly & with very high success rates.

I could go on & on about the tons of practical & useful features for different photography genres and for both stills & video but that would just take too long.

Bottomline after my 2 weeks with the Nikon Z6III , I standby my title of this post , the Z6III is just an amazing photography & videography tool with amazing value. Nikon packed so much into this class of camera which is just unheard of so far.

Let me put it this way , the Z6III is as robust (weather sealed) & performs significantly better than even the f-mount flagships like the D5 & D6 (yes , I have used these cameras).

Against the benchmark Z9 or class-leading Z8. the Z6III is really not that far away in the hands of a capable photographer.

The Z6III definitely hold's it's own .......... great job Nikon !!!

Hope you enjoy this blog.

Cheers,

Andrew
